This article provides a brief, individual overview of the topic of sexual energy from a Taoist perspective and is intended, at best, to encourage readers to reflect on their own experiences and desires regarding this topic, to conduct further research, and to enrich their lives through fulfilling sexual energy.

The Primordial Energy Jing

The Primordial Energy Jing

In the Taoist tradition, sexual energy is considered one of the strongest forms of life force. Sexual energy—known as Jing Chi in Taoism—is present from birth as a primal force, distributed between the kidneys and the genital area.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is regarded as essential for the body’s fluid balance. If the body has sufficient circulation and volume of fluids, nutrients and oxygen are supplied to the cells via the blood, while waste products are excreted via the urine.

Life force—Jing Chi is limited

An excessive lifestyle and a strenuous sex life gradually deplete this primal energy over time. If this primal energy drops to a minimum, it leads to a variety of disorders in the body.

Sexual Alchemy—Cultivating Jing Chi

Sexual Alchemy—Cultivating Jing Chi

The cultivation of sexual energy—or life force—as a powerful source of vitality, emotional balance, and spiritual development is an integral part of the Taoist teachings of Sexual (Inner) Alchemy.

Instead of wasting Jing Chi, these practices teach how to circulate, refine, and transform life force to nourish the body, strengthen the internal systems, and, beyond that, deepen the connection between partners.
The act of procreation, through which new life is created and the survival of the species is ensured, serves as a vivid symbol of sexual energy as the highest life force in human beings.

Life force is the foundation of quality of life

As can be seen from the preceding explanations, cultivating sexual energy leads to a higher quality of life. The fundamental importance of sexual energy is also evident in the fact that this area of training is already an integral part of the basic curriculum in the Universal Healing Tao® System and is referred to as Healing Love or “Taoist Secrets of Love.”

In this training module, in addition to the fundamentals of “Healing Love” practices—ranging from the activation of energy channels and Taoist meditation to individual exercises for men and women, and extending to the exploration of energy work with a partner and advanced methods of sexual inner alchemy—are taught.

Participants learn how to control their sexual energy, increase their vitality, strengthen their internal organs, and deepen their intimacy—using traditional Taoist techniques that have been preserved for centuries.

Both men and women undergo this transformative process individually during the training before they may subsequently practice this expanded approach to sexuality and sexual energy with a sexual partner.

Quick sexual gratification loses its importance, and the conscious handling of sexual energy—as well as its appreciation—come to the forefront.

Practicing Healing Love—The Ability to Channel Chi

The ability to channel Chi is of particular importance at all levels of the Universal Healing Tao®.  A prerequisite for working with sexual energy is therefore first to develop the ability to activate the body’s most important energy channels and to regulate so-called emotional energy through fundamental Taoist practices such as the “Inner Smile,” the “Microcosmic Orbit” meditation, and grounding exercises like the “Iron Shirt.”

It is also always advisable to harmonize any existing emotional imbalances in advance through the practice of the “Inner Smile” and “Six Healing Sounds” to avoid connecting negative energy with sexual energy.

The Cultivation of Sexual Energy

The Cultivation of Sexual Energy

Next, one can begin to cultivate and circulate sexual energy (Jin Chi) within the body—using specific exercises and techniques designed for both men and women. These practices boost vitality, improve hormonal balance, and train the body to transform sexual energy into Qi.

Primordial energy, or sexual energy, serves as the source energy and is distributed throughout the kidneys and the sexual organs; it is interpreted as a raw or uncultivated form of energy. Through a process known as the “refinement” of this raw energy, the gradual depletion of vital energy can be limited or slowed in practice.

The initial goal is therefore to refine the sexual energy in its raw, initial form. This is achieved through various targeted exercises as well as massage techniques.

Finally, the refined sexual energy obtained in this way is channeled through the spine into the brain via specific breathing and contraction sequences. The refined energy spreads to various areas, nourishing the brain and thereby supporting, among other things, the function of the pituitary gland.

Ideally, this subtle (sexual) energy is channeled through the entire minor energy circuit—that is, from the perineum/crotch up through the spinal canal to the head and then down the front of the body via the tongue and palate.  This process is already taught and practiced in the “Tao Energy Cultivation” basic course of the Universal Healing Tao® System.

With appropriate practice, this refined sexual energy—Chi—can also be directed to individual organs, thereby positively influencing the entire glandular system. In short: the cultivation of sexual energy ultimately leads to greater mental capacity and better physical health.

Mental development paves the way toward a spiritually oriented life, and physical well-being leads to a happier, healthier life.

Sexual Energy in Couple Relationships

Sexual Energy in Couple Relationships

The more advanced Taoist practices of multi-orgasmic cultivation and dual energy exchange teach specific techniques through which partners learn to circulate energy together and deepen their emotional and energetic connection.

During sexual union with another person, the deliberate management of sexual energy can also evoke an entirely new experience.

For example, certain positions during intercourse can be practiced to strengthen specific organs, while also broadening the overall range of intense physical interaction between partners.

Stamina and sexual pleasure are also prolonged due to the increased release of oxytocin, creating a deep bond between the partners.

Sexuality thus transcends momentary satisfaction to become a source of uplifting, nourishing energy for both sexual partners.

All exercises in the Universal Healing Tao® System courses are always taught fully clothed in a structured, respectful learning environment. The focus of the training here is on inner mindfulness, breathwork, energy flow, and the conscious cultivation of sexual vitality.

Sexuality and the Social Context

In the following section, I’ll briefly share some very personal observations on European culture and its approach to sexuality.

The Catholic Church plays a major role in this regard in Europe. Sex was accepted only as honorable for the purpose of procreation and within marriage; however, sexuality for pleasure and without a wedding ring was considered a sin, while naked bodies were viewed as immodest in private but sanctioned in large-scale church murals.

Sexuality in a social context currently plays a greater role than it did in past centuries. In the past, it was kept behind closed doors, and people did not talk about it.
In our culture, sexual activity was dominated mainly by men; at home, it followed the same pattern over and over again and was dictated by the man’s will, who, as needed, resorted to affairs or visits to prostitutes.

Fear of unwanted pregnancies stifled women’s sexuality. In the wake of the women’s liberation movement, women became increasingly aware of their bodies, and the birth control pill made them feel less anxious about sex. They began to express their needs. Combined with growing financial independence, this led to insecurity among men—including in matters of sexuality.

Today, images and videos on social media create a great deal of pressure—especially among younger people—to live up to certain standards.
Physical attributes are visibly promoted everywhere as a promise of success. Added to this is the trend toward traditional gender roles. Taken together, this leads to increasing aggression as a form of defense and self-assertion, and ultimately to sexualized violence. Such is the current social situation.

Conversely, one could say: Those who embrace a form of sexuality that empowers them—and are thus more balanced and peaceful—also show greater respect for those around them and thereby make a positive contribution to society.

Sexuality—Boundaries Are Disappearing

Sexuality—Boundaries Are Disappearing

When we look at the physical aspect of sexuality, it is clear that the norm of a clear-cut distinction between male and female is no longer relevant.

People vary greatly in terms of their physical and psychological characteristics. Furthermore, the nature of primary and secondary sexual characteristics varies enormously.

Today, up to seven different sexual identities are being discussed—an expansion that, on the one hand, represents an enrichment but, on the other, unsettles many people.

All people have sexual feelings, which are usually first perceived upon reaching sexual maturity but are already present energetically in infants.

The more relaxed one’s approach to sexual energy is, the more effortlessly it can be experienced.

Each person experiences sexuality—in terms of its expression and significance—in a very individual way.

Mantak Chia and the Universal Healing Tao®

Sexuality in one’s personal life is an integral part of a person’s self-understanding or identity and should always be treated with the utmost consideration and respect.

Grandmaster Mantak Chia is the founder of the “Universal Healing Tao®” system and one of the world’s most experienced teachers of Taoist health practices, qigong, and inner alchemy.

For decades, Mantak Chia has been teaching the cultivation of sexual energy under the title “Healing Love” or “Taoist Secrets of Love,” and through a conscious approach to sexuality and sexual energy—the most powerful life force—he has helped countless people improve their quality of life.

Master Chia places particular emphasis on safety, gradual development, and working directly with the body and the energy system. His methods focus on restoring vitality, strengthening the internal systems, and promoting long-term health through traditional Taoist practices, which are made accessible to modern practitioners through the Universal Healing Tao® System.
