Course Description
In this four-day workshop, Grandmaster Mantak Chia introduces “Cosmic Healing Qigong 1” and its roots in Taoist shamanism—a comprehensive system for harnessing the bio-electro-magnetic forces of the universe for self-healing, longevity, and supporting the healing of others. Building on the fundamental practices of the Universal Healing Tao®, participants will learn the essential five-step path to mastering Qi, from preserving and harmonizing energy, through its transformation and amplification, to radiating it outward using the “Buddha Palm” technique. The workshop also covers Taoist-shamanic practices for emotional protection, building protective energy fields, and awakening guardian spirits—practical mental hygiene for practitioners of all levels.
Bio-Electro-Magnetism and Life Force
We humans owe our lives to a unique combination of forces and energies in our environment and within us. The two main forces are electricity and magnetism — what the Western world calls bio-electric magnetism and the Taoists call Chi. Bio means life, electric refers to the universal energies (yang) of the stars and planets, and magnetism refers to the earth energies (yin) or gravitational forces that prevail on all celestial bodies. This Chi infuses everything in the heavens, on earth, and in nature, and for five thousand years the adepts of Cosmic Healing Qigong have used long-established methods to tap this inexhaustible reservoir.
Prenatal and Postnatal Chi
Two basic types of Chi operate in humans. Prenatal Chi, a combination of Chi and Ching inherited from parents, manifests as innate vitality and cannot be increased significantly after birth. Postnatal Chi is the vitality an individual acquires during life through food, breathing, and conscious living. If postnatal Chi is depleted by excessive lifestyle, poor diet, or shallow breathing, we begin to deplete our prenatal Chi, leading to premature aging, illness, and eventually death.
Foundation in Basic Exercises
Cosmic Healing 1 builds on the Universal Healing Tao® basic exercises, including the Microcosmic Orbit, Six Healing Sounds, Skin and Bone Breathing, Iron Shirt Practice, and Tan Tien Exercises. Through the practitioner’s inner preparation with these foundational methods, the mental and spiritual abilities needed for Cosmic Healing are trained and strengthened. The exercises are based on the Shaolin Singing Qigong, from which the rarely taught Kong Jing Qigong has been derived — rare lineage methods that provide the energetic foundation for the Cosmic Healing practices.
Preserving and Harmonizing Chi
The first step in Cosmic Healing Qigong is to preserve Chi by gaining control of those gates through which we habitually lose energy — through the reproductive system, through negative emotions, and through constantly turning our senses outward. The second step is to harmonize Chi by ensuring an unobstructed and balanced flow of energy throughout the body — the ideal of Chinese medicine. If our energy is not balanced, we may have too much in some places and too little in others, leading to extreme reactions and erratic physical conditions.
Transforming and Increasing Chi
In the third step, we learn to transform Chi into more useful forms of energy. Using Taoist sexual practices such as Healing Love, sexual energy is transformed into fundamental life force, while the Inner Smile, the Six Healing Sounds, and the Fusion of the Five Elements transform negative emotional energy into positive Chi. Emotional blockages can also be released through Chi Massage or Chi Nei Tsang®. Once these stages are mastered, the practitioner begins to increase Chi by tapping into the unlimited reserves of heaven, earth, and nature — but only after preserving, harmonizing, and transforming Chi have been established, to avoid amplifying disharmonious energies.
Projecting Chi to Heal
Finally, we learn to expand our mind to absorb the inexhaustible Chi of nature and the universe to heal body, soul, and spirit, as well as to support other people. When we practice Cosmic Healing Qigong, our hands become sensitive to Chi feeling and Chi flow. We use the Yi power of mind-eye-heart to absorb cosmic Chi through the palms and the crown and send it out through the hands, helping others restore inner balance without directly touching them or depleting our own energy.
The Power of Yi
Yi in Chinese means intention, awareness, mind power, and concentration — it controls and directs Chi. With our mind we control our thought patterns and our head senses; with our heart we control all organs and their associated positive and negative emotions. When the consciousness of mind, eyes, and heart unite into one, a precious alchemical mixture is created. The power of Yi is the magical catalyst that guarantees positive results in the energetic field.
The Buddha Hand
At the core of Cosmic Healing 1 is a method Grandmaster Mantak Chia calls the “Buddha Hand” or “Empty Hand Practice.” The aim is to strengthen the practitioner’s Chi, to work with colored Chi, and to learn to give Chi to others. After physical Qigong exercises have prepared the body to receive and hold higher spiritual energies, the inner energy pathways are opened — including the Governing and Conception Vessels (Du Mai and Ren Mai), the Ascending Channel (Chong Mai), and especially the Chi Belt (Dai Mai). However, Grandmaster Chia warns against the inexperienced use of some advanced hand and visualization techniques.
Taoist Shamanism and Emotional Protection
The theme group “Taoist Shamanism,” taught by Grandmaster Mantak Chia in Berlin for the first time in 2007, has its roots in the Universal Healing Tao® Cosmic Healing. Practitioners learn to protect themselves by transforming externally absorbed emotions into useful body energies. The old system of “sucking shamans” is still in use, but modern practitioners are no longer trained to shield themselves from burdensome emotional alien energies and mental attacks. Grandmaster Chia teaches how to recognize and convert these absorbed energies rather than simply taking them on.
Protective Fields and Guardian Spirits
Grandmaster Chia shows participants how to build simple protective fields around themselves and gives them the opportunity to balance their own body-energy system — practical mental hygiene for anyone working with the energies of others or moving through emotionally charged environments. He also guides participants through the invocation of guardian spirits and demonstrates how to handle the spirits in the Taoist shamanic tradition, connecting the practitioner to protective spiritual forces that have been part of the Taoist lineage for centuries.
