Course Description
Cosmic Healing Qigong 3 – Awaken the Nine Souls and Spirits explores the spiritual dimensions of Chinese medicine and Taoist inner cultivation within Healing Art 4 – Cosmic Healing Qigong of the Universal Healing Tao® System developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. Taught by Wolfgang Heuhsen, UHT Global Branch Leader – Cosmic Healing and Cosmic Healing III Senior Teacher, the course extends Cosmic Healing I’s energetic methods and Cosmic Healing II’s planetary and astral dimensions into a deeper exploration of consciousness, the Nine Souls and Spirits, and the forces shaping perception, emotion, and intention, combining theory with meditation and practical exercises for direct inner experience.
Course Introduction
This course is taught by Wolfgang Heuhsen, who serves as UHT Global Branch Leader – Cosmic Healing and Cosmic Healing III Senior Teacher within the Universal Healing Tao® System. The underlying practices, concepts, and curriculum originate from the Universal Healing Tao® System developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. The course extends the Cosmic Healing training beyond the energetic methods of Cosmic Healing I and the planetary and astral dimensions of Cosmic Healing II into a deeper exploration of consciousness, the Souls and Spirits, and the inner forces that influence perception, emotion, intention, and spiritual development. It combines theoretical explanation with meditation and practical exercises to make these Taoist concepts accessible through direct inner experience.
The Spiritual Dimension of Chinese Medicine
Classical Chinese medicine does not describe the human being solely through organs, channels, and physiological functions. The traditional concepts of Hun, Po, Yi, Zhi, and Shen also describe psychological and spiritual dimensions associated with the Five Zang organs, in which body, emotion, consciousness, and spirit are interconnected. Cosmic Healing Qigong 3 develops this perspective further, using the physical body as the foundation for exploring subtler relationships between the Souls and Spirits, emotional patterns, conscious intention, and spiritual awareness. Rather than treating these concepts as abstract philosophy, the practices invite direct observation of how different inner tendencies appear in everyday life.
Hun and Po as Inner Polarity
Hun and Po represent two complementary dimensions of the human soul in traditional Chinese thought. Hun is associated with the Liver and with movement, vision, imagination, and the capacity to reach beyond the body’s immediate limitations, while Po is associated with the Lungs and with embodiment, sensation, instinct, and the rhythms of life and death. Hun opens toward expansion and possibility while Po brings consciousness back into embodied experience, one reaching outward and the other anchoring inward, and healthy development requires communication between both. Traditionally, Hun carries stronger Yang qualities of movement and expansion, while Po carries stronger Yin qualities that connect consciousness to the physical body and material existence. Spiritual cultivation therefore does not mean rejecting the body in favor of spirit, nor reducing consciousness to physical experience, but seeks an integration in which the body provides the foundation from which consciousness develops and gives direction and meaning to embodied life.
The Five Organ Souls and Spirits
The wider framework includes the traditional spiritual aspects associated with the Five Zang organs — Shen with the Heart, Hun with the Liver, Po with the Lungs, Yi with the Spleen, and Zhi with the Kidneys. These terms describe different qualities of consciousness and inner organization, together providing a map for understanding how emotions, intention, memory, will, perception, and awareness interact. The course explores how these qualities can support one another when balanced, and how inner conflict may arise when they become disconnected or dominated by habitual emotional patterns.
Three Pure Ones and Three Worms
A second level of the course explores the symbolic relationship between the Three Pure Ones and the Three Worms. Within Taoist religious and cultivation traditions, the Three Pure Ones represent highly refined dimensions of Taoist cosmology and spiritual realization, while the Three Worms belong to a different body of traditional imagery associated with tendencies that bind human consciousness to habitual desires, attachments, and patterns. In the course, these images provide a framework for observing inner conflict as two tendencies within human development, one moving toward refinement, awareness, and integration, and the other pulling consciousness toward automatic behavior, attachment, and fragmentation. Much of human behavior occurs without deliberate planning, arising instead from accumulated experiences, emotions, habits, and unconscious associations, and the practice teaches the student to notice the movement of an impulse before acting on it, creating a small but important space within which a different choice may become possible.
Interactions of Gui and Shen
The third level of the course explores the subtle relationship between Gui and Shen, two complementary dimensions within a broad early Chinese cosmology of spirit and transformation. Gui is not simply translated as demon or evil spirit but carries a wider historical range, strongly associated with Yin, return, the Earth, death, and the forces that move downward or remain bound to material existence, while Shen is associated with luminous, expansive, ordering, and ascending qualities of spirit. Within the course, Gui and Shen are approached as two poles of a single breath, expressing different directions within the movement of consciousness, one returning inward and downward and the other opening outward and upward. Within Taoist Inner Alchemy, spiritual cultivation is described as a process of refinement in which dense, reactive, or fragmented qualities are progressively recognized and transformed, not denied, so that tendencies attached to old experiences and unresolved patterns can be related to differently rather than automatically controlling behavior.
Awakening the Nine Souls and Spirits
The title Awaken the Nine Souls and Spirits brings several layers of Taoist anthropology together, understanding the human being not as a single undifferentiated consciousness but as an interplay of different spiritual and psychological functions relating to the organs, emotions, senses, intentions, instincts, and deeper dimensions of awareness. The number nine carries symbolic associations of completeness in Chinese cosmology, and the aim of the practice is not to create nine separate entities within the imagination but to develop a more differentiated understanding of consciousness and gradually bring these qualities into greater coherence. A central principle of the course is that transformation begins with awareness, since patterns that remain unconscious tend to repeat themselves, while a pattern that becomes visible opens the possibility of choice. This applies equally to the countless intuitive, everyday decisions that arise from emotional experience, memory, and disposition rather than deliberate analysis, and the practices emphasize course correction — recognizing when thought, emotion, or behavior has moved away from one’s deeper values and making a correction, small or fundamental, as part of the ongoing work of cultivation.
Cultivating Values and Virtues
Within the Universal Healing Tao® system, transformation is closely connected with the cultivation of virtues, and the organ emotions are approached not only as problems to be eliminated but as energetic systems that also contain constructive qualities to be cultivated and strengthened. Awareness of anger may reveal the possibility of kindness, fear may be related to gentleness and inner stability, restlessness may be transformed toward joy and clarity, grief may open toward courage and integrity, and worry may become openness and balance. The Heart and Shen occupy a central position in this process, since in classical Chinese medicine and Taoist cultivation the Heart is closely associated with consciousness, clarity, and the capacity to integrate the other spiritual aspects, so that a calm Heart allows the different aspects of consciousness to communicate more clearly while a disturbed Heart can fragment perception and decision-making.
From Fragmentation to Integration
The different teachings of the course point toward a common process. Hun and Po reveal complementary movements within the embodied soul, the Three Pure Ones and Three Worms provide symbolic images for refinement and habitual attachment, and Gui and Shen describe deeper polarities of return and expansion, Yin and Yang, embodiment and luminosity — not separate subjects, but different levels of the same developmental question of how the many forces within human consciousness can become more consciously related to one another. Cosmic Healing Qigong begins with the principle that the human being exists within a larger field of relationships, with Earth, Heaven, Nature, the planets, and the wider cosmos reflected within human experience, and Cosmic Healing 3 turns this perspective inward, approaching the inner world itself as a cosmos containing different movements, forces, directions, and levels of consciousness. Cosmic Healing I develops fundamental methods of working with Chi and the relationship between the human energy system and Heaven and Earth, Cosmic Healing II expands this work toward planetary and astral dimensions, and Cosmic Healing III develops it further into the spiritual and consciousness-related dimensions of the system, shifting the focus from where Chi moves toward what directs it and which quality of consciousness is active. The broader aim is not to remove complexity from human life but to become increasingly capable of remaining aware within that complexity, since awareness creates choice, choice creates direction, and repeated conscious direction gradually shapes the path of cultivation.
From Complex to Complete: Introducing the Higher Tier of Practice
Within the Universal Healing Tao® System, Cosmic Healing Qigong forms Healing Art 4, and the currently published UHT Education Guide formally lists Cosmic Healing Qigong I and Cosmic Healing Qigong II within this Healing Art, with the official Cosmic Healing Education Path, updated October 2024, presently defining certification requirements only for Cosmic Healing I and II at the Practitioner, Teacher, and Senior Teacher levels. At the same time, Cosmic Healing III is already represented within the Universal Healing Tao® teaching structure — the mantak-chia-media video platform presents Awaken the Nine Souls and Spirits as Mantak Chia’s Cosmic Healing 3 within the Cosmic Healing Qigong course category.
A book on the course content, co-authored by Wolfgang Heuhsen with Mantak Chia, titled Cosmic Healing 3: Awaken the Nine Souls and Spirits, will be published by mantak-chia-media shortly.
