Course Description
Cosmic Vision by Grandmaster Mantak Chia presents a Taoist system of practices for caring for and strengthening the eyes. Its starting point is that the eyes are not an isolated organ but are closely tied to the whole body, especially the liver and kidneys. Special eye exercises are combined with inner Qigong, the Healing Sounds, Tao Yin self-massage, and the activation of meridians and acupressure points. Beyond physical sight, the practice cultivates awareness of Chi, relaxation of body and mind, and deeper inner perception, placing eye training within a broader Taoist path of harmonizing body, energy, and consciousness.
Eyes and Close-Work Strain
The human eye was not designed for extended close work such as reading, computer use, factory work, or sewing. Its natural position is gazing into the distance, at 20 feet or more, where the ciliary eye muscles relax because incoming rays of light are parallel. During close work, light enters the eyes at diverse angles, so the ciliary muscles must contract to focus light upon the macula, which causes strain. Unfortunately, we live in a close-vision world.
Causes of Myopia
Myopia, or nearsightedness, has two causes. The first is not focusing or using the eyes enough while looking into the distance. The second is performing excessive close work. According to tests on thousands of people over the years, weak vision in most cases is caused by strain on the eye muscles.
Eye Muscle Tension and Eyeball Shape
Eye strain creates tense eye muscles, and tense muscles connected to the eyeball eventually distort its shape. A fundamental principle of eye improvement training holds that relaxing tension in the eye muscles and strengthening weak ones can make weak or defective eyes strong again. Myopia means the eyeball is elongated, while farsightedness (hypermetropia) and presbyopia (old age sight) mean it is flattened. Both result from defective accommodation, which is caused by weak, unbalanced eye muscles. A myopic eye is “frozen” in an elongated position, making distant objects hard to see, while a farsighted eye is “frozen” in a flat position, making near objects hard to see.
Liver, Kidneys, and Eye Health
The liver sends energy, nerve impulses, and blood to the eyes, so a clean bloodstream and a healthy, well-functioning liver heal and strengthen them. When the colon and liver are toxic and blocked with waste, the blood becomes impure, health declines, and the eyes grow weak and drab with heavy dark circles around them. For this reason, the eyes cannot be treated as an isolated organ. Cosmic Vision therefore links the health of the eyes to the entire organism, and especially to the liver and kidneys.
Inner Qigong and Healing Sounds
Cosmic Vision combines its special eye exercises with inner Qigong and the Healing Sounds. This pairing reflects the Taoist view that the health of the eyes is closely connected to the whole organism, especially the liver and kidneys.
Tao Yin Self-Massage and Acupressure
Tao Yin self-massage is integrated with the eye exercises as part of the system. Alongside it, the practice includes the activation of meridians and acupressure points. Like inner Qigong and the Healing Sounds, these methods reflect an approach that works with the whole body rather than with the eyes alone.
Focus and Peripheral Vision Exercises
The methods described include exercises to improve focus, relaxation, and peripheral vision. They include the Egyptian Black Dot Technique, the Taoist Long Swing, the Tai Chi Rocker, and various palming techniques.
Nutrition and Constitutional Types
The exercises are complemented by nutritional teachings. These incorporate the Chinese Five Elements theory and Ayurvedic constitutional types.
Chi Awareness and Inner Perception
The focus is not only on physical vision. Grandmaster Mantak Chia connects the work with the eyes to conscious awareness of Chi, relaxation of body and mind, and a deepened inner perception. Cosmic Vision thereby understands eye training as part of a broader Taoist practice for harmonizing body, energy, and consciousness.
