Course Description
Unlock the Mysteries of the Taoist Kan and Li is a 5-day, 26-hour video course within Healing Art 5 – Inner Alchemy Immortality of the Universal Healing Tao® System. It is led by Andrew Jan, martial artist and UHT Global Branch Leader for Inner Alchemy, who presents the Lesser, Greater, and Greatest Kan and Li formulas developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. Rather than reproducing the full depth of Lesser, Greater, and Greatest Kan and Li as separate certification workshops, the course distills the inner essence of all three levels and all three forms, tracing the cauldron's progression from the Lower Tan Tien through the Solar Plexus to the Heart Center.
Course Introduction and Instructor
This 5-day, 26-hour video course is taught by Dr. Andrew Jan, a martial artist who serves as UHT Global Branch Leader for Inner Alchemy Immortality and UHT Inner Alchemy Immortality Senior Instructor within the Universal Healing Tao® System. The three Kan and Li formulas he presents were developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia within the same system, and the course allocates roughly one day to Lesser Kan and Li, two days to Greater Kan and Li, and two days to Greatest Kan and Li. Rather than treating the three formulas as isolated practices, Dr. Jan's essence training reveals their underlying continuity as the cauldron rises through the body and awareness expands outward.
Kan and Li Principle
Kan and Li represent Water and Fire, the fundamental Yin and Yang qualities within Taoist Inner Alchemy. Where Fire naturally rises and Water naturally descends, the Kan and Li practices reverse this tendency, guiding Fire downward and Water upward so the two forces meet within an internal cauldron. Their coupling produces the symbolic steam that gives rise to what the Universal Healing Tao® describes as Neutral Force, a new quality that is neither simply Water nor simply Fire. This language describes the transformation and integration of complementary energetic qualities rather than a literal physical process.
Lesser Kan and Li – Lower Cauldron
Lesser Kan and Li, KL1, establishes the first cauldron in the region of the Lower Tan Tien, between the navel and Ming Men, where Heart Fire is brought downward and Kidney Water and sexual essence are brought upward. A central practice, Steaming the Organs, brings the resulting internal mist into awareness of the Five Zang organs and their meridians, working successively with the Kidneys, Liver, Spleen, Heart, and Lungs to release held energetic and emotional patterns. Dr. Jan's teaching places particular emphasis on the solid and hollow organs, using warmth, mist, breathing, and awareness to soften areas of habitual tension. This stage is also associated with the beginning development of the soul body, cultivated through the pearl, embryo, and cauldron imagery of Taoist Inner Alchemy.
Greater Kan and Li – Solar Plexus
In Greater Kan and Li, KL2, the cauldron rises from the Lower Tan Tien to the Solar Plexus, traditionally known as the Yellow Court or Central Palace, where Water and Fire are again gathered and coupled at a larger scale. The practitioner's awareness extends beyond the internal body to Earth, the Sun and Moon, the planets, and the Big Dipper and North Star, which serve as meditative reference points for the expanding field of Yin and Yang. Expressions such as leaving the physical body describe contemplative experiences in which the ordinary boundaries of body-centered awareness become less dominant, not a literal departure from the body. This stage continues the soul body's development from Lesser Kan and Li and introduces the cultivation of what the system calls the immortal spirit body.
Greatest Kan and Li – Heart Cauldron
With Greatest Kan and Li, KL3, the cauldron rises again to the Heart Center, the Middle Tan Tien or Cinnabar Palace, where Water and Fire are coupled at a subtler level involving Shen, consciousness, and compassion. Also known as Gathering the Cosmic Light, this stage expands awareness to stars, constellations, and increasingly vast cosmological imagery, which the practitioner gathers back toward the Heart Center. The curriculum includes activation of the Cranial and Sacral Pumps and alignment of the Three Triangle Forces, supporting the central energetic pathway. The spiritual embryo cultivated through the earlier stages is further developed here, described in the UHT texts as the Inner Child or Pill of Immortality emerging from the Heart Center.
From Microcosm to Macrocosm
The progression through the three Kan and Li formulas can be understood as a gradual expansion from microcosm toward macrocosm. Lesser Kan and Li begins within the internal body, organs, meridians, and the Lower Tan Tien; Greater Kan and Li moves toward the Solar Plexus and expands awareness toward Earth, Sun, Moon, planets, and stars; and Greatest Kan and Li moves the cauldron to the Heart and extends the contemplative field toward constellations and the wider cosmos. At every stage, however, expansion is followed by return, as the practitioner gathers the expanded field back into the cauldron rather than simply moving outward.
Huang Ji, Wu Ji, and Oneness
At the deeper stages of the practice, the distinction between the observer and the field of awareness becomes increasingly subtle, and Dr. Jan describes this movement in terms of a spirit or formless identity. The course introduces Huang Ji, approached as a state of profound central integration, and Wu Ji, the undifferentiated condition prior to the polarity of Yin and Yang, representing a reversal of the cosmological process from the many toward the one. The complementary image of Oneness completes this movement, as the expansion through body, Earth, and cosmos eventually returns to integration, so the many forces are experienced as expressions of one larger field. These contemplative methods describe an expanding of awareness rather than a scientific claim that consciousness literally travels to astronomical locations.
Position Within the Nine Formulas
Within the Universal Healing Tao® sequence of Inner Alchemy, the three Kan and Li levels follow Fusion of the Five Elements and constitute Formula 4, Lesser Kan and Li; Formula 5, Greater Kan and Li; and Formula 6, Greatest Kan and Li. They are followed by the more advanced formulas beginning with Sealing of the Five Senses. The Kan and Li sequence therefore forms the central bridge between the foundational Fusion practices and the highest levels of Inner Alchemy Immortality.
Training and Certification
Within the official Universal Healing Tao® education system, Lesser, Greater, and Greatest Kan and Li, KL1, KL2, and KL3, are three separate certifications within Healing Art 5 – Inner Alchemy Immortality, each requiring updated UHT Inner Alchemy Certified Teacher status. Each level calls for a first attendance of at least 20 hours of workshop training, a second attendance of at least 20 hours assisting Grandmaster Mantak Chia or an updated Senior Instructor, and an oral examination that may be conducted in person or online; the required Case Study Forms are 15 for KL1, 10 for KL2, and 8 for KL3, with Darkroom Retreat participation recommended but not mandatory. This 5-day, 26-hour essence course allocates roughly one day to Lesser, two days to Greater, and two days to Greatest Kan and Li, and provides a comprehensive overview of their continuity, but it does not by itself satisfy the 20-hour first-attendance requirement, Case Study Forms, second attendance, or oral examination for any of the three levels. For UHT Certified Instructors, the course provides advanced study and training that can contribute to preparation for later KL1, KL2, and KL3 certification, without by itself fulfilling the complete requirements of the UHT Inner Alchemy Immortality Education Path.
