Course Description
This course presents "Greater Enlightenment of Kan and Li", an advanced stage of Taoist Inner Alchemy Immortality, the Healing Art Five taught by Mantak Chia and Andrew Jan that builds on the foundation of Lesser Kan and Li. The practice shifts the alchemical cauldron from the Lower Tan Tien to the Solar Plexus, where Water and Fire energies are gathered, balanced, and refined into the beginnings of the Spiritual Embryo, Immortal Fetus, and Spirit Body. Drawing on Taoist history, organ energetics, and cosmic forces from Earth, Sun, Moon, and stars, the course guides practitioners toward a progressive reunion of Yin and Yang, body and spirit, human and cosmos.
Kan and Li Symbolism and Principles
Kan represents Water and Li represents Fire, forces linked in the Universal Healing Tao® System to the kidneys and heart, Yin and Yang, and sexual and heart energy. Greater Kan and Li works to bring these seemingly opposite forces back into a unified state. Traditional symbols such as Dragon and Tiger, lead and mercury, and the cauldron and elixir are explored as different expressions of this inner union. The practice also connects these images to the trigrams Kan and Li and to broader Taoist cosmological concepts.
Solar Plexus Cauldron Formation
Where Lesser Kan and Li centers on the Lower Tan Tien, Greater Kan and Li establishes the alchemical cauldron at the Solar Plexus. Hot and cold energies are drawn from different areas of the body and brought together at this new center through the Thrusting Channels. Cold Water energy from the kidneys and sexual organs is coupled with warm Fire energy from the heart and other Yang aspects. This union is described as reducing the separation between opposing forces and deepening the practitioner's experience of inner unity.
Refining Fire and Water Energies
Building on the steaming process from Lesser Kan and Li, this stage uses the image of Fire beneath Water to describe the transformation of denser energy into increasingly refined Chi and Shen. Practitioners learn not only to gather Fire but to regulate it and adjust conditions within the cauldron. The emphasis throughout is on balance rather than force. The aim is to let opposing energies interact until a new, more unified energetic quality emerges.
Organ Energies and the Immortal Fetus
Organ energies play a central role in this stage, with particular emphasis on the Spleen and the Earth element alongside the virtues of the other organs. Traditional symbolic imagery, including animals and pure children, represents these refined forms of organ energy. The purified qualities are gathered to nourish the developing Spiritual Embryo. Rather than a simple visualization, the Immortal Fetus is presented as the gradual consolidation of previously scattered energies and aspects of consciousness into a more stable subtle body.
Conception and Embryo Symbolism
The course draws on the traditional language of self-intercourse, conception, pregnancy, and birth to describe this inner union of complementary forces. The coupling of Yin and Yang is compared to conception, with the resulting unified energetic state becoming the embryo or fetus. This embryo is understood as an increasingly stable concentration of refined Chi and consciousness. Through continued practice, it is nourished by the virtues and energies of the organs and gradually developed into the Energy Body and later the Spirit Body.
Opening the Heart Center
A further step involves opening and emptying the Heart Center, integrating heart energy with the alchemical process and connecting it to expanded awareness. Within the system, opening the heart is considered essential for moving beyond an isolated sense of self. This practice also prepares students for the next level, Greatest Kan and Li, in which the alchemical cauldron moves still higher to the Heart Center.
Celestial and Natural Energy Cultivation
Greater Kan and Li extends the practice beyond the physical body to connect with the energies of Earth, Sun, Moon, North Star, Big Dipper, planets, and stars. Solar and lunar energies represent complementary Yang and Yin qualities, while the North Star and Big Dipper serve as key sources of refined celestial Chi for nourishing the developing subtle body. Specific exercises extend this connection to trees, plants, and animals, broadening the practitioner's awareness beyond the boundaries of the individual body. In this way, energy cultivation becomes a relationship between the human energetic system and the larger forces of Earth and Heaven, with power drawn from sources such as the sky, the earth, the moon, or a forest.
Astral Flight and Spirit Body Development
This stage introduces practices connected with the Third Eye, spiraling, and Embryonic Breathing to expand consciousness, building on advanced forms of the Inner Smile and the Fusion of the Five Elements. Spiraling practices extend awareness beyond the ordinary boundaries of the body, while the Unicorn Practice and Vertical Flight prepare practitioners for what the authors describe as Astral Flight and movement of consciousness through the Mid-Plane. The Energy Body is further refined and supplied with internal, terrestrial, and celestial energies as the Spiritual Embryo is strengthened, allowing consciousness to become less dependent on identification with the physical body. These practices of Vertical and Astral Flight symbolize and cultivate this expansion of awareness, moving toward the state of Wu Wei, in which ordinary distinctions between observer and observed, inner and outer, and individual self and the greater whole begin to dissolve.
Daily Practice Routine
The course concludes by bringing these teachings into a regular practice routine, addressing preparation, food and digestion, work, sleep, dreaming, indicators of progress, and schedules for home practice. A complete daily Greater Kan and Li sequence is outlined so that the individual formulas can be integrated into one continuous practice rather than treated as isolated exercises.
