Course Description
Iron Shirt Chi Kung III – Bone Marrow Nei Kung is the third and final level of the Iron Shirt training within Healing Art 2 – Internal Martial Arts of the Universal Healing Tao® System developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. Building on the rooting of Iron Shirt I and the tendon development of Iron Shirt II, this course directs the practice into the deeper structures of the body, working with the bones, bone marrow, sexual energy, and internal vibration. Practitioners learn to draw and store Chi within the skeletal system, developing an advanced physical and energetic foundation for further Internal Martial Arts and Inner Alchemy training.
Foundations of Bone Marrow Nei Kung
Bone Marrow Nei Kung builds on the rooting and structural integration developed in Iron Shirt I and the tendon work of Iron Shirt II, directing the practice toward the deeper structures of the body. Its central themes are the bones, bone marrow, sexual energy, internal vibration, energetic absorption, and the cultivation and storage of Chi within the skeletal system. Within the Universal Healing Tao® tradition, it is regarded as an advanced method for strengthening the physical and energetic foundation of the body, preparing it for deeper levels of Internal Martial Arts and Inner Alchemy.
Bone Breathing and Bone Compression
A central practice of Bone Marrow Nei Kung is Bone Breathing, in which attention, breathing, and visualization are directed into the bones to develop greater awareness of the skeletal structure and draw Chi more deeply into the body. This is progressively combined with Bone Compression, where breathing, internal pressure, posture, and awareness are coordinated to concentrate Chi within the bones. Within the UHT teaching system, the bones are regarded not only as physical structures but also as reservoirs capable of storing refined internal energy. This extends the principles of Iron Shirt training from the muscles, fascia, and tendons into the deeper skeletal structure.
Hitting and Vibrational Practice
Bone Marrow Nei Kung includes a systematic sequence of controlled tapping and hitting techniques, applied to different areas and energetic lines of the body with the hands or traditional training tools. The purpose within the UHT method is to create vibration through the tissues and bones, develop greater internal awareness, and encourage the circulation of Chi through areas that might otherwise remain comparatively inactive. The training follows specific lines and methods rather than indiscriminate striking. Knowledge of these hitting lines and tools forms an explicit part of the official UHT Iron Shirt III certification requirements.
Sexual Energy and Bone Marrow Practice
A distinctive feature of Bone Marrow Nei Kung is the integration of sexual energy cultivation. Within Taoist Inner Alchemy, Jing is regarded as one of the fundamental essences available for transformation and refinement, and Bone Marrow Nei Kung incorporates specific practices intended to circulate this energy toward the deeper structures of the body. The curriculum includes separate theoretical and practical approaches for men and women, including testicle self-massage for men and breast self-massage for women, together with methods for circulating and transforming sexual energy. The official UHT certification rules require candidates to understand both the male and female aspects of these practices, regardless of their own sex.
Bone Marrow and Vitality
The Universal Healing Tao® tradition associates healthy bones and bone marrow with vitality, blood formation, and the body's ability to maintain its internal reserves, and modern physiology confirms that bone marrow plays a central role in blood-cell formation and changes significantly with age. Bone Marrow Nei Kung approaches this relationship through the traditional language and methods of Chi cultivation, aiming to build body awareness, internal strength, energetic circulation, and a deeper relationship with the skeletal structure. The practice does not replace medical prevention or treatment of osteoporosis or other bone disorders, and it should not be described as scientifically proven to reactivate stem cells or reverse age-related changes in the bone marrow. It is more accurately presented as a traditional practice that supports internal cultivation, movement, circulation, and structural awareness.
Skin Breathing and Energy Absorption
Advanced stages of the training expand awareness beyond ordinary respiration through Skin Breathing, in which attention is extended over the surface of the body and then progressively directed inward toward the tissues and bones. The practitioner learns to experience the body as an energetic exchange system rather than as an isolated physical structure. Within the terminology of the Universal Healing Tao®, environmental Chi is gathered through the skin, circulated through the body, and stored within deeper energetic reservoirs. This principle links Bone Marrow Nei Kung with the earlier Iron Shirt practices of rooting, Skin and Cell Breathing, and whole-body integration.
Opening the Meridians
Tapping, vibration, breathing, and movement are also used to stimulate the energetic pathways of the body. Rather than working with the bones in isolation, Bone Marrow Nei Kung integrates them with the tendons, fascia, organs, meridians, and the Lower Tan Tien. The aim is to create a continuous internal network through which Chi can be gathered, conducted, and stored. This continues the progression established in the first two stages of Iron Shirt.
Chi Weight Lifting
One of the advanced components of Bone Marrow Nei Kung is Chi Weight Lifting, which combines the principles of sexual energy cultivation, breathing, internal pressure, rooting, and controlled loading. Within the Universal Healing Tao® system, the practice is intended to develop deeper structural and energetic strength and to train the connection between the reproductive system, pelvic floor, Lower Tan Tien, fascia, and skeletal structure. Because of its advanced nature, Chi Weight Lifting is approached progressively and with careful attention to technique. Knowledge of its principles and methods is explicitly included in the official UHT Iron Shirt III practical evaluation.
Iron Shirt Training Progression
Iron Shirt III completes the three-stage Iron Shirt cycle within Healing Art 2 – Internal Martial Arts. Iron Shirt I – Rooting develops grounding, structural alignment, and the connection between Heaven and Earth. Iron Shirt II – Tendon Nei Kung develops elastic tendon strength and the transmission of force through the entire body. Iron Shirt III – Bone Marrow Nei Kung extends the training into the bones and marrow, integrating Bone Breathing, internal vibration, sexual energy cultivation, tapping practices, and advanced Chi Weight Lifting. Together, these three levels progressively develop the physical and energetic structure that supports the further practices of Internal Martial Arts and Inner Alchemy.
Training and Certification
According to the UHT Internal Martial Arts Education Path 2026, certification in Iron Shirt III – Bone Marrow Nei Kung, IS3, requires a minimum of 10 hours of workshop education, delivered by Grandmaster Mantak Chia, an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Senior Instructor, or an updated UHT Certified Instructor holding the Iron Shirt III qualification, with candidates already certified as an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Certified Instructor. The practical evaluation covers the required hitting lines and training tools, the theory of male and female practices, testicle and breast self-massage methods, the principles of Chi Weight Lifting, and a minimum of 15 completed Iron Shirt III Case Study Forms, followed by an oral examination with an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Senior Instructor Level 1 or 2 who holds the Iron Shirt III qualification. The 2-day Mantak Chia video course currently available provides approximately 10 hours of instruction together with practical exercises, theoretical teaching, and accompanying course material, though different editions on the official platform list either 9 or 10 certification hours. For formal IS3 certification, the decisive requirement is therefore the minimum of 10 recognized workshop hours specified by the Education Path 2026, not simply completion of any one video edition. Unlike Iron Shirt I and II, the 2026 education rules do not state that the IS3 practical evaluation must take place in person.
