Course Description
Lesser Enlightenment of Kan and Li introduces the first of three advanced Kan and Li formulas within the Universal Healing Tao® System of Taoist Inner Alchemy. At its center is the conscious union of Water and Fire — the cooling yin energy of the kidneys and sexual essence meeting the warming yang energy of the heart and its Compassion Fire. By reversing these forces and coupling them in the cauldron of the Lower Tan Tien, practitioners set the alchemical Steaming Process in motion, refining Jing, Chi, and Shen toward the formation of the Soul or Energy Body and the Immortal Fetus.
Water and Fire Union
Kan represents Water and Li represents Fire, the two original polarities at the heart of this practice. The cooling yin energy of the kidneys and the sexual essence is united with the warming yang energy of the heart and its Compassion Fire. Reversing the natural direction of these two forces creates an alchemical cauldron in the Lower Tan Tien, where Water is brought above Fire. This inner connection forms the basis of the Steaming Process that follows.
Primordial Force and Compassion Fire
Preparatory exercises first develop awareness of the Primordial Force and the inner space of the Lower Tan Tien. The positive qualities of the five main organs are activated and gathered in the heart as Compassion Energy. Love and Joy of the heart, Openness of the spleen, Courage of the lungs, Gentleness of the kidneys, and Kindness of the liver together form the energetic foundation of the Compassion Fire.
Sexual Energy and Pakua Work
The practice includes the collection and refinement of sexual, or orgasmic, energy as a further source of alchemical material. Students also work with the inner Pakuas and their associated energetic Collection Points. These elements prepare the sexual and organ energies for the coupling of hot and cold forces that follows.
Coupling Hot and Cold Energies
At the core of the practice, hot and cold energies are consciously separated, gathered, and then coupled in the Lower Tan Tien. Fire Energy from the Heart, Thymus, and Adrenals is guided downward, while Water Energy from the Kidneys and Sexual Center rises upward to meet it in the central cauldron. The Heartbeat, Kidney Pulse, Sexual Energy, and Earth Pulse are integrated into this process. Mantak Chia describes this reversal as a decisive step of Inner Alchemy, through which Jing is refined into the subtler Life-Force Energy known as Chi.
The Alchemical Cauldron and Steaming Process
The coupling of Water and Fire in the Lower Tan Tien gives rise to the Steaming Process, the alchemical heart of the practice. The energetic “steam” generated in the cauldron is systematically guided through the body. Pulsing, breath, and inner awareness support and sustain this process.
Steaming the Organs and Channels
The Steaming Process is directed through the Five Vital Organs, the glands, the spine, the nervous system, and the lymphatic system. Students also learn to open and energetically activate the Twelve Major Channels. Together, these steps circulate the refined energy through the body's major systems.
Inner Eye and Self-Intercourse
The practice is complemented by work with the Inner Eye and by Self-Intercourse, the inner union of the polarized Water and Fire energies. The sequence concludes with Turning the Wheel, completing the circulation set in motion by the Steaming Process.
Forming the Soul and Energy Body
The overarching goal of the practice is the formation and nourishment of the Soul, or Energy Body. The physical body is understood as an alchemical vessel in which Jing, Chi, and Shen are increasingly gathered and refined. In Universal Healing Tao® terminology, this process gives rise to the Spiritual Embryo, or Immortal Fetus, laying the foundation for the later formulas of Greater and Greatest Kan and Li, in which this subtle body is further developed into the Spirit Body.
Darkness Practice and the Pineal Gland
A substantial section of the course is devoted to Darkness Practice, the Taoist tradition of meditating in complete darkness. Related topics include sleep and dream, the neuroendocrine system, the Pineal Gland, and the various stages of the darkroom experience. Within the Universal Healing Tao® System, darkness is presented as a supportive environment for altered states of consciousness and for the development of the Energy Body. The biochemical interpretations offered, including statements about DMT and other endogenous substances, belong to this explanatory model and should not be equated with established medical findings.
Taoist Cosmology and Cosmic Meditations
The practice is set within a broader Taoist cosmology in which the human body appears as a microcosm in resonance with the Earth, Sun, Moon, planets, and stars. Complementary meditations work with the Big Dipper, the Nine Sacred Mountains, the Nine Palaces, protective animal energies, internal cauldrons and the Gathering of the Small Pill. The Big Dipper and the North Star serve within the system as cosmic reference points for refining and nourishing the Energy Body.
