Course Description
Lesser Enlightenment of Kan and Li – Steaming the Organs is an advanced practice of Taoist Inner Alchemy within Healing Art 5 – Inner Alchemy Immortality of the Universal Healing Tao® System, developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. As Formula 4 of the Nine Formulas, it follows the three stages of Fusion of the Five Elements and introduces the alchemical coupling of Water and Fire, symbolized by Kan and Li. This 3-day video course, taught by martial artist Dr. Andrew Jan, a certified UHT Inner Alchemy Immortality Senior Instructor, concentrates on the Steaming the Organs dimension of the practice, guiding students through the cauldron, the organs, and the Twelve Channels.
Course Introduction and Instructor
Lesser Enlightenment of Kan and Li – Steaming the Organs is presented in this 3-day, approximately 13-hour video course by Dr. Andrew Jan, a martial artist recognized by Universal Healing Tao® as Global Branch Leader – Inner Alchemy and Inner Alchemy Immortality Senior Instructor, certified in Fusion I, II and III, Lesser Kan and Li (KL1), Greater Kan and Li (KL2), Greatest Kan and Li (KL3), and Sealing of the Five Senses. While Andrew Jan teaches the course, the practice itself was developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia within the Universal Healing Tao® System, as Formula 4 of the Nine Formulas within Healing Art 5 – Inner Alchemy Immortality. The course concentrates particularly on the Steaming the Organs dimension of the practice.
Foundations of Kan and Li
The Chinese terms Kan and Li refer symbolically to Water and Fire. Within this practice, the ordinary energetic relationship between these two qualities is deliberately reversed, with the cooling Water quality of the Kidneys and sexual essence brought upward, and the warming Fire quality of the Heart brought downward, meeting within the internal cauldron. In the symbolic language of Taoist Inner Alchemy, Fire naturally rises while Water naturally descends, and if left unchecked the two forces gradually separate; Lesser Kan and Li reverses this tendency, bringing Fire down and Water up so that, once they meet, they no longer act merely as opposing forces but interact, producing a symbolic warm internal steam. Within Universal Healing Tao® teaching, this steam represents a more balanced or neutral energetic quality arising from the conscious coupling of Yin and Yang, described in Mantak Chia's materials as the joining of the Yin and Yang pearls.
The Inner Cauldron
The image of the cauldron, a vessel in which different ingredients are brought together and transformed, is fundamental to Taoist Inner Alchemy. In Lesser Kan and Li, the cauldron is established in the region of the navel and Lower Tan Tien, becoming the internal laboratory of the practice. Here, Water and Fire are gathered, brought into relationship, and coupled, and the resulting energy is refined and circulated. The process continues the alchemical principle already developed in Fusion, drawing the many toward the one.
Fire, Water, and Sexual Alchemy
The Heart represents the Fire aspect of the practice, encompassing not only warmth but also consciousness, compassion, emotional refinement, and Shen; rather than allowing Fire to rise continuously toward the head, the practice gathers the Heart's energy and brings it downward into the cauldron. The Kidneys and sexual center provide the complementary Water quality, associated in Taoist Inner Alchemy with Jing, Original Essence, and deep constitutional vitality, which is gathered and raised upward. Earlier Universal Healing Tao® practices teach the conservation and circulation of Jing and sexual energy, and Lesser Kan and Li incorporates this energy into a more advanced alchemical process, combining it with the refined Fire quality of the Heart as a further transformation from Jing toward Chi and Shen.
Coupling the Pearls
The meditation frequently represents Fire and Water as pearls or spheres of light, first gathered and differentiated and then consciously brought together within the cauldron. Their polarity creates movement, and their union produces the symbolic steam. The practitioner learns first to distinguish the energetic qualities clearly and then to bring them into relationship, a sequence of distinction followed by reunion that is one of the fundamental principles of Inner Alchemy.
Steaming the Organs and Organ Spirits
One of the central practices of Lesser Kan and Li, and the particular focus of this course, is Steaming the Organs, in which the warm internal mist generated through the coupling of Water and Fire is brought successively into awareness of the Kidneys, Liver, Spleen and Pancreas, Heart, and Lungs, together with their associated energetic pathways. Within the contemplative language of the practice, the steam is used to soften, cleanse, harmonize, and refine the energetic qualities associated with the organs – a traditional model of energetic cultivation, not a claim that physical organs, glands, nerves, genes, or lymphatic tissues are medically regenerated by meditation. The organ work also carries a spiritual dimension, drawing on the classical Chinese association of the Five Zang organs with the Five Organ Spirits – Shen with the Heart, Hun with the Liver, Po with the Lungs, Yi with the Spleen, and Zhi with the Kidneys. As the Five Element energies are gathered and refined, the organ spirits can be experienced as parts of a larger integrated consciousness.
From the Five to the One
Fusion of the Five Elements prepares this process by differentiating, gathering, purifying, and centering emotional and elemental qualities, and Lesser Kan and Li continues from this foundation by bringing the refined organ energies into the Water and Fire process, progressively drawing the five toward unity. In the Universal Healing Tao® teaching, this integration contributes to the formation of what is described as the soul or energy body, formed and nourished through the combination of Heart Fire and Kidney Water. This belongs to the spiritual cosmology of the Universal Healing Tao® and describes an increasingly coherent level of subtle awareness rather than an anatomically measurable structure. Lesser Kan and Li provides the foundation for the later Greater Kan and Li practice, in which the system introduces the further cultivation of the immortal spirit body.
Channels and the Neutral Force
The generated steam is also directed toward the spine, coordinating the cauldron, internal pulse, breathing, and awareness along the spinal column, and continuing the internal relationships established through the Microcosmic Orbit and the Thrusting Channels. Mantak Chia's teaching extends the steaming process into the Twelve Channels, described as extensions of the organs, making prior familiarity with the Five Elements and the energetic pathways especially valuable. The Thrusting Channels organize the movement of Water and Fire upward and downward before they meet in the cauldron, with the Central or Core Channel becoming particularly significant as the practice develops. Kan and Li is therefore not simply a combination of two opposites, since the interaction between Yin and Yang gives rise to a third, balanced condition described in Universal Healing Tao® terminology as the Neutral Force, symbolized by the steam itself.
Sealing the Laboratory and Darkness Practice
The practice includes the symbolic sealing of an inner laboratory, enclosing the body energetically through the Microcosmic Orbit and Belt Channels to create an egg- or cocoon-like field that concentrates attention and contains the energetic process. Once the cauldron is established, awareness may be coordinated with the heartbeat and the perceived pulsation of the organs and cauldron, so that attention gradually shifts from deliberate effort toward inward listening and observation. The formal Universal Healing Tao® Education Path highly recommends, without requiring, participation in a Darkroom Retreat for Lesser Kan and Li, using reduced sensory stimulation to direct awareness increasingly inward; any specific biochemical claims attached to darkness practice in some Universal Healing Tao® materials are not presented here as established medical or neuroscientific effects.
Training and Certification
Within the Nine Formulas, Lesser Kan and Li, key KL1, marks the transition from the foundational Formulas 1 through 3 – Basic Energy Cultivation, Sexual Alchemy, and Fusion of the Five Elements – to the advanced Fire and Water formulas, followed by Greater Kan and Li (KL2), Greatest Kan and Li (KL3), and Sealing of the Five Senses. As a certification discipline of Healing Art 5 – Inner Alchemy Immortality, the current Inner Alchemy Immortality Education Path 2023 requires a candidate to already hold UHT Inner Alchemy Certified Teacher status, attend a first 20-hour Lesser Kan and Li workshop, complete 15 Lesser Kan and Li Case Study Forms, attend a second 20-hour workshop while assisting Grandmaster Mantak Chia or an updated Senior Instructor, and pass a final oral examination. This 3-day video course with Dr. Andrew Jan, at approximately 13 hours and 3 minutes, represents recognized advanced instruction by a fully qualified Inner Alchemy Immortality Senior Instructor and an important component of the education process; its recorded duration, however, is shorter than the minimum 20 hours required for the first full Lesser Kan and Li workshop attendance, so it should be understood as advanced training rather than fulfillment of the complete KL1 certification requirements by itself.
