Course Description
The Microcosmic Orbit is the foundational practice of the Universal Healing Tao® system. In this meditation, practitioners learn to circulate Chi through the two principal meridians — the Governor Vessel rising along the spine and the Conception Vessel descending along the front of the body — forming one continuous energy circuit the Chinese masters called the Small Heavenly Cycle. The practice relies not on force or willpower but on relaxation, calm attention, and the guiding power of the mind's eye. When the orbit is open, Chi flows steadily through the body, nourishing organs, balancing Yin and Yang, and laying the essential groundwork for all higher-level inner alchemy practices.
The Two Main Meridians
Two meridians form the Microcosmic Orbit. The Du Mai (Governor Vessel) is the ascending Yang channel, running from the perineum upward over the coccyx and along the spine through Ming Men, Chi Chung, and Yu Chen to the crown point Bai Hui. From there the energy flows down across the mid-forehead point Yin Tang to the palate. The Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) is the descending Yin channel, carrying energy down the front of the body through the throat, heart, solar plexus, and navel back to the perineum, where the cycle begins again.
The Tongue as Energy Switch
The tip of the tongue functions as a switch that closes the circuit between the two vessels. Placed against the palate just behind the upper front teeth, it bridges the Governor and Conception Vessels and allows the energy to flow in one uninterrupted loop.
Core Conditions: Relaxation and Awareness
The decisive factors in this practice are not force and willpower but relaxation and quiet attention. The practitioner sits upright with a loose, relaxed spine and breathes naturally. Energy is not pushed but guided by the mind and the inner eye — what Chia calls "Mind-Eye-Power" — supplemented by placing the hands on the respective energy centers.
Preparatory Practices and Warm-Ups
Before circulating the orbit, preparatory Qigong warm-up exercises loosen the spine. "The Inner Smile" and "Warming the Stove" — which includes bellows breathing, kidney massage, and collecting Chi in the lower Tan Tien — ready the body and mind for the meditation.
Mind-Eye-Power Technique
Chia emphasizes that the energy is directed through the power of the mind and the inner eye rather than through muscular effort. The practitioner focuses gently on each energy center in turn, using awareness and intention to invite the Chi to move along the pathway.
Opening the Pathways
"Opening the pathways" means dissolving the blockages that obstruct the natural flow of Chi — most often physical, mental, or emotional tension. This clearing process is essential before the energy can circulate freely through both main channels.
Collecting and Storing Energy
Equally important is the proper conclusion of every session: the energy is always gathered and stored at the navel. If too much Yang energy rises to the head, it is consciously guided back down through the Conception Vessel to restore balance.
Balancing Yin and Yang
When the orbit is open, Chi streams steadily and unimpeded through the body. The warm current reaches all internal organs, enlivens the nervous and circulatory systems, and redistributes excess energy to areas that are under-supplied. Yin and Yang, warmth and coolness, heaven and earth blend naturally, bringing the organism into equilibrium. Practitioners report growing vitality, released tension, and a clearer, calmer mind.
Foundation for Advanced Practices
The Microcosmic Orbit is the foundation upon which all higher practices are built. Only when the two main channels are open can the six special power channels be accessed and the inner alchemy exercises be meaningfully developed. Outwardly, the Microcosmic Orbit opens the connection to the forces of nature, the six directions of universal energy, and the power of the earth.
Return to the Prenatal Energy System
Mantak Chia describes the practice as a return to the prenatal energy system: in the womb, Chi entered through the navel and circulated along this very pathway — a rebirth process, a return to the original self. In Chinese traditions this knowledge was long considered the "highest secret" of inner power, shared only in the closest circles, until Grandmaster Mantak Chia first made it publicly available in book form in 1983.
