Course Description
Iron Shirt Chi Kung II – Tendon Nei Kung is the second level of the Iron Shirt training within UHT Healing Art 2 – Internal Martial Arts of the Universal Healing Tao® System developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. Building on the rooting and structural alignment established in Iron Shirt I, this course turns to the tendons, joints, and fascia, training the body to receive, conduct, and transmit force as a single connected structure rather than through isolated muscular effort. Practitioners learn to draw force from the ground and channel it through the legs, spine, and arms, developing the elastic strength that underlies later Tai Chi and martial applications.
The Bow and the String
Traditional Taoist imagery compares the body to a bow, with the bones forming its structural frame and the tendons functioning as the string. A bow without an elastic, properly tensioned string cannot transmit power efficiently, and the human body works the same way, requiring both structure and elasticity. Tendon Nei Kung develops this interaction between bones, tendons, joints, and Chi. Rather than generating force through isolated muscular contraction, the exercises cultivate elastic tension along interconnected lines of the body, allowing energy and physical force to travel through the entire structure with less unnecessary resistance.
Opening the Joints
One of the fundamental aims of Iron Shirt training is the opening of the joints. Through spiraling movements, stretching, alignment, breathing, and relaxation, unnecessary compression within the joints is reduced, and the body gradually develops more space and greater elasticity. Within the Universal Healing Tao® system, open joints are considered important pathways for the circulation of Chi. Rather than simply stretching individual muscles, the exercises establish continuous connections through the feet, ankles, knees, hips, sacrum, spine, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, and fingers, creating a whole-body structure in which movement and force travel without interruption at any single joint.
Tendon Power
Tendon Nei Kung develops what the UHT system describes as Tendon Power, training the tendons to become strong, elastic, and responsive while the surrounding muscles remain relaxed. This elasticity makes it possible to absorb, store, redirect, and release force, combining firmness with softness so the structure stays stable without becoming rigid. Through regular practice, the body learns to respond more like a connected spring than a collection of separate muscular parts.
Earth Force and Whole-Body Connection
A fundamental principle of Tendon Nei Kung is the transmission of force from the Earth. The feet establish the root, the legs carry the force upward into the pelvis and spine, and from there it continues through the shoulders and arms to reach the hands and fingers, forming a continuous energetic and biomechanical chain. Rather than producing movement primarily from the arms or shoulders, the practitioner learns to involve the entire body. In the language of the Universal Healing Tao®, this Earth Force is drawn into the structure and directed through the tendons, providing an important foundation for later Tai Chi, martial applications, and more advanced internal training.
The Eight Tendon Nei Kung Postures
The official UHT education path requires knowledge of all eight Tendon Nei Kung postures for certification in UHT Iron Shirt II - Tendon Nei Kung. These postures train different lines of tension and connection throughout the body, each developing a particular relationship between the feet, legs, pelvis, spine, shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers. The exercises gradually teach the practitioner how to create and release elastic tension without losing rooting or structural alignment. Through repeated practice, the eight postures build timing, whole-body coordination, and the ability to transmit force through the tendons rather than relying predominantly on muscular strength.
Timing and Pushing Test
An important part of Iron Shirt II training is the relationship between structure, timing, and external pressure, and the UHT certification process accordingly includes a Timing and Pushing Test. This training demonstrates that the practitioner can maintain structural integrity and tendon connection while responding dynamically to external force. Correct timing allows the body to receive, redirect, and transmit pressure through the entire structure, distinguishing Tendon Nei Kung from static strength training. The aim is not merely to resist force, but to remain connected, elastic, rooted, and responsive while force moves through the body.
Preparation of the Physical Body
Within the Universal Healing Tao® system, Iron Shirt practice is regarded not only as martial training but also as preparation for higher levels of internal cultivation. The physical and energetic body must be prepared to receive, conduct, and store increasingly refined energies. Open joints, elastic tendons, rooted structure, and a strong connection between Earth, body, and Tan Tien create a stable foundation for this process. From the perspective of UHT Inner Alchemy, increased energetic awareness should be accompanied by an increasingly prepared physical structure, and Tendon Nei Kung serves this purpose by strengthening the body's internal connections without sacrificing softness and mobility.
Elastic Tendons and Fascia
Tendon Nei Kung works not only with individual tendons but with continuous lines of connective tissue throughout the body, developing the sensation that the body is connected from the feet to the hands. Spiral stretching and coordinated movement allow force generated in one part of the body to be transmitted through other areas without interruption. This integrated structure supports efficient movement and provides the physical basis for many Internal Martial Arts principles. The goal is not maximal muscular strength but elastic strength, structural integration, and efficient transmission of force.
Iron Shirt Training Progression
Within Healing Art 2 – Internal Martial Arts, the Iron Shirt cycle progresses through three principal levels — Iron Shirt I – Rooting, Iron Shirt II – Tendon Nei Kung, and Iron Shirt III – Bone Marrow Nei Kung. Iron Shirt I establishes rooting and structural alignment, Iron Shirt II develops tendon elasticity, whole-body connection, and force transmission, and Iron Shirt III continues the training into the deeper structures of the body with Bone Marrow Nei Kung. Together, these three stages progressively prepare the physical and energetic body for the more advanced practices of Universal Healing Tao® Internal Martial Arts.
Training and Certification
UHT training rules require a minimum of 10 hours of workshop education in Iron Shirt II – Tendon Nei Kung, delivered by Grandmaster Mantak Chia, an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Senior Instructor, or an updated UHT Certified Instructor holding the Iron Shirt II qualification. The 2-day video workshop with Grandmaster Mantak Chia provides approximately 11 hours of instruction, officially credited with 10 certification hours, and includes practical exercises, theoretical instruction, morning Qigong, and an accompanying booklet. Certification requires the candidate to be an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Certified Instructor and to complete a practical evaluation in person, demonstrating all eight Tendon Nei Kung postures together with the Timing and Pushing Test. An additional oral examination is required with an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Senior Instructor Level 1 or 2 who holds the Iron Shirt II qualification. Upon successful completion, the certification is recorded as UHT Iron Shirt II – Tendon Nei Kung, IS2, within Healing Art 2 – Internal Martial Arts.
