Course Description
The Six Healing Sounds are an ancient Taoist Qigong practice and one of the foundational techniques of the Universal Healing Tao® system. Each of the five main yin organs — heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and spleen — is associated with a specific healing sound, color, and energy quality. Through controlled breathing, subvocal vibrations, and targeted movement sequences, excess heat trapped in the organ fascia is released and distributed throughout the body. Disharmonious emotions are transformed into harmonious Chi, restoring balance to the organs and the entire energetic system. Grandmaster Mantak Chia has been instrumental in bringing this powerful self-healing practice to the West.
Ancient Origins of Sound Healing
In all cultures, shamans and medicine men have accompanied the treatment of the sick with rhythm, songs, and dances. The Chinese physician Sun Si Miao, known among the common people as the king of medicine, discovered as early as 600 AD that the vibrations of certain tones positively influence the course of diseases. The ancient Tao masters, through their inner practices, found that each healthy organ is associated with a particular sound, color, and energy quality.
The Five Yin Organs and Their Sounds
The five yin organs — heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and spleen — form a life-sustaining whole in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the "Six Healing Sounds" address each one specifically. For every organ the Tao masters identified a vibration that supports its healthy natural frequency. Each of these main yin organs also has an associated subsidiary yang organ that responds in the same way, so that practicing the appropriate sound benefits both the organ and its counterpart.
Vibration, Color, and Energy Quality
Every healthy organ possesses a characteristic sound frequency, color, and energetic quality. When emotional problems, environmental pollution, poor diet, injuries, or overly strenuous exercise weaken an organ, these properties change. The sounds are used to create frequencies that restore the specific energy quality each organ needs for proper function. Each sound can produce different forms of healing energy tailored to the different organs.
Causes of Organ Overheating
Urban society creates a life full of physical, mental, and emotional stresses such as crowding, pollution, radiation, poor food, chemical additives, anxiety, loneliness, poor posture, and excessive physical activity. Individually or in combination, these stresses cause tension and begin to block the free flow of Chi, causing the organs to overheat. Persistent overheating leads to contraction and hardening in the organs, impairing their ability to function and eventually leading to disease. The modern environment also lacks nature’s cooling safety valves — trees, open spaces, and running water.
The Role of Fascia
Chinese medicine teaches that every organ is surrounded by a sac or layer of tissue called fascia that regulates its temperature. Ideally, fascia releases excess heat outward through the skin, where it is exchanged for cool vital energy from nature. An overload of physical or emotional tension causes the fascia to adhere to the organ, preventing it from releasing heat or absorbing cooling energy. The Six Healing Sounds help release excess heat trapped in the fascia surrounding each organ.
Sound and Movement Sequences
During the practice, each healing sound is accompanied by a specific sequence of movements so that the meridians associated with the organ are also activated. As practitioners assume the postures and create the sounds subvocally, the vibrations distribute excess heat to cooler regions of the body, where it can be safely stored or utilized. The Healing Sounds accelerate the exchange of heat through the digestive system and the mouth, helping to cool and cleanse the organs and the skin.
Transforming Disharmonious Emotions
According to the Taoist view, emotions have their seat in the organs, where life-giving Chi is collected, refined, and stored. Physical and mental stress can cause blockages of Chi flow, leading to overheating or hypothermia and the buildup of disharmonious emotional energies. With the help of the Six Healing Sounds, these emotions are transformed into harmonious Chi — sadness into courage, fear into gentleness, aggressiveness into generosity, hatred into love, and brooding into openness.
Cooling and Detoxification of Organs
The Six Healing Sounds contribute to the cooling and detoxification of the organs by draining disharmonious emotions that hinder energy flow. Excess heat is released or evenly distributed throughout the body through the mouth and the digestive system, which runs more than six meters from mouth to anus between all the organs. When all sounds and postures are performed in the correct order, body heat is evenly distributed, and each organ reaches its proper temperature.
Daily Practice and Its Benefits
Daily practice of the Six Healing Sounds helps restore and maintain tranquility and health. Greater sexual pleasure, improved digestion, and the prevention of minor ailments such as colds, flu, and sore throats are commonly reported benefits. Many students of the Universal Healing Tao® have overcome long-standing dependencies on sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and antacids. Since the organs are also connected to the muscles, releasing tension in the organs improves mobility as well.
Building Virtue Energies
Once the organ energies are balanced through the Six Healing Sounds, a strong foundation is established for building and nurturing virtue energies. Periods of rest during the practice are very important, allowing the positive qualities to grow in the organs, so there is less room for disharmonious energy to spread. Begin with one to two sounds per session, and as the movements, sounds, and awareness become integrated into daily practice, the exercises can be simplified for even greater effectiveness.
