Kursbeschreibung
Iron Shirt Chi Kung I – Rooting is one of the foundational practices of UHT Healing Art 2, Internal Martial Arts, within the Universal Healing Tao®® System developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. This 2-day video course guides students through the standing postures, breathing methods, and internal awareness training that build structural alignment, rooting, and the capacity to gather and store Chi within the body. Rather than relying on muscular tension, the training develops a relaxed, connected, and internally integrated body that can receive external force and transmit it safely to the ground, laying the physical and energetic foundation for more advanced Internal Martial Arts and Inner Alchemy practice.
Foundations of Iron Shirt Chi Kung
Iron Shirt Chi Kung I – Rooting is one of the foundational practices of Healing Art 2, Internal Martial Arts, within the Universal Healing Tao®® System developed by Grandmaster Mantak Chia. The practice develops internal strength, structural alignment, grounding, and the ability to gather and store Chi within the body. Rather than relying primarily on muscular tension, Iron Shirt training teaches the body to become relaxed, open, connected, and internally integrated. The training also develops the Lower Tan Tien as a center of gravity and internal power, where conscious breathing and Chi cultivation gather, condense, and store energy within the body.
Rooting and Internal Structure
Iron Shirt I teaches how to align the feet, legs, pelvis, spine, shoulders, and head so that the body functions as one connected structure. Rooting is understood not simply as pressing downward into the ground, but as a balanced relationship between relaxation, alignment, internal pressure, and awareness, through which the practitioner learns to receive external force and conduct it through the body's structure toward the Earth. At the same time, Earth Chi is drawn upward through the legs and integrated into the body's energetic system. The result is a stable yet flexible posture that supports balance, centeredness, and efficient movement.
Iron Shirt Breathing
Breathing plays an essential role in Iron Shirt practice. In addition to natural abdominal breathing and reverse abdominal breathing, the system uses forms of Packing or Compression Breathing to build internal pressure and strengthen the energetic connection between the organs, fascia, muscles, and skeletal structure. Within the Universal Healing Tao® system, this internal pressure is used to gather and store Chi and to create greater structural integrity throughout the body. Breathing is always coordinated with posture, relaxation, and mental awareness, so that the body develops real strength while remaining relaxed rather than simply creating muscular tension.
Iron Shirt Postures
Iron Shirt I includes a series of traditional standing postures that progressively develop rooting and internal structure, among them Embracing the Tree, Golden Turtle, Water Buffalo, Holding the Golden Urn, Golden Phoenix Washes Its Feathers, Iron Bridge, and fundamental Horse Stance variations. Each posture emphasizes a particular aspect of alignment, rooting, spinal organization, internal pressure, and energetic connection. Embracing the Tree develops the basic rooted standing structure and establishes the connection between the arms, spine, Tan Tien, legs, and Earth. Golden Turtle develops a rounded and protected spinal structure while strengthening the back, kidneys, and the relationship between the spine and Lower Tan Tien, while Golden Urn develops rooting, internal pressure, and the capacity to maintain an integrated structure under external force. These postures form part of the practical skills required for UHT Iron Shirt I certification.
Opening the Joints and Spiral Structure
An important aspect of Iron Shirt Chi Kung is the gradual opening of the joints. Through spiral stretching and correct alignment, unnecessary compression is reduced and the joints are given more space, with the spiral principle connecting the feet, legs, hips, spine, shoulders, arms, and hands into continuous structural lines. This creates a body that is both stable and mobile. Rather than holding the body rigidly, Iron Shirt develops elasticity within the structure, with strength arising from the coordinated interaction of bones, tendons, fascia, breathing, Chi, and awareness.
Connection with Heaven and Earth
Iron Shirt practice places the human body between the energetic forces of Heaven and Earth. The feet establish a connection with the Earth, while the crown and spine maintain an upward orientation toward Heaven, and the Lower Tan Tien functions as the central point where these forces are gathered and integrated. Within the Universal Healing Tao® system, this relationship supports both physical stability and the later stages of energetic cultivation. Iron Shirt is therefore not taught only as a martial practice but also as preparation for advanced Inner Alchemy, in which increasingly refined forms of Chi must be received, circulated, and stored within a stable physical structure.
Skin and Cell Breathing
The training also introduces Skin and Cell Breathing, in which awareness is expanded from ordinary respiration toward the entire surface of the body. Within the UHT practice, the skin is experienced as an energetic boundary through which Chi can be exchanged with the surrounding environment, and awareness, breathing, and visualization are combined to develop greater sensitivity to the body's surface and internal tissues. These methods complement the rooting practices by combining external energetic awareness with the development of internal structure.
Iron Shirt Lineage and Progression
Within the Universal Healing Tao® training system, Iron Shirt I – Rooting is the first stage of the Iron Shirt lineage, followed by Iron Shirt II – Tendon Nei Kung and Iron Shirt III – Bone Marrow Nei Kung. The broader Healing Art 2 also includes Tan Tien Qigong, Tao Yin, and the Tai Chi Chi Kung training levels, and its overall purpose is to prepare the physical body to gather, store, and conduct increasingly refined forms of Chi. Iron Shirt I is particularly important because it establishes the rooting and structural principles required for later Internal Martial Arts training, and current UHT rules require Iron Shirt I certification before progressing to Tai Chi Chi Kung I.
Training and Certification
The official UHT Internal Martial Arts Education Path 2026 requires a minimum of 10 hours of Iron Shirt I workshop education, which may be given by Grandmaster Mantak Chia, an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Senior Instructor, or an updated Certified Instructor who holds the Iron Shirt I certification. The 2-day video workshop with Grandmaster Mantak Chia provides approximately 11 hours of video instruction and is officially listed with 10 certification hours, combining theory, practical exercises, morning Qigong, and supporting course material. Candidates must already be certified as an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Certified Instructor and must demonstrate knowledge of the Iron Shirt postures by completing a practical Rooting examination, which under the 2026 training rules must be conducted in person and includes rooting tests in Embrace the Tree, Turtle, and Golden Urn, along with an additional oral examination conducted by an updated UHT Inner Alchemy Senior Instructor Level 1 or 2 who holds the Iron Shirt I qualification. Unlike several other UHT training branches, Iron Shirt I does not require Case Study Forms for certification, since the emphasis is on direct demonstration of the physical and energetic skills. The video course itself can cover the required training hours, but it does not replace the in-person Rooting examination — successful completion of the training and evaluation leads to the qualification UHT Iron Shirt I – Rooting, IS1, within Healing Art 2 – Internal Martial Arts.
